Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular rulings from the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
