This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.

Although not quite at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”

The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”

Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
