On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
