The Former Congresswoman Makes a Landmark as Virginia's Initial Woman State Leader

Over many decades, Virginia has seen 74 governors, each one of them male. This week, Abigail Spanberger broke this historic barrier by winning the election as the first female governor in the commonwealth's records.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Concerns and Strategic Criticism

The former US congresswoman and CIA operative won with a campaign that highlighted economic pressures and deliberately challenged the former president's agenda rather than the individual.

Background and Academic Journey

Hailing from in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at age 13. Her father was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She studied at the UVA, receiving a degree in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before pursuing a career in public service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger told followers at a gathering in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Government Roles

At the Postal Service, she handled involving narcotics, abusers and financial criminals. She served legal orders, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and focused on anti-terror efforts, working covertly and abroad.

Family Decision

In that year, she and her spouse, an technical professional, faced a decision. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They took out a world map and asked their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to shift from a national duty, to local engagement because she was correct. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in the commonwealth, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which works against gun violence, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had won the seventh district in 50 years.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was implementing with his authority and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my member of Congress repeatedly work against the Affordable Care Act. And I knew I had to step up. So spoiler: I succeeded.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In the capital, she rapidly became linked to the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She earned a reputation for working with colleagues across the aisle and was often cited as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she believed alienated centrists, cautioning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be used against them in tight races.

Centrist Group

Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a part of the “centrist alliance” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of the New York representative.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would rather run for governor in 2025.

Her platform focused on themes of civic duty, support for education and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her CIA background lent her authority on defense issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation rather than a career.

Election Victory

This enabled her to withstand rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on social topics, including the assertion that Spanberger is an radical on individual freedoms and transgender healthcare.

The governor-elect, who maintained that local school districts should decide whether trans youth can compete in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the mainstream of the commonwealth's citizens.
