Putin Assures Steady Energy Shipments to India in Defiance of Washington Sanctions

Amid a clear statement to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “unbroken” supplies of crude oil to India. This declaration came when Putin and Modi met in the Indian capital and affirmed their partnership were “immune to outside influence.”

A Message Aimed at the Western Countries

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, that have sought to pressure New Delhi into reducing its close links with Moscow. The backdrop follows recent American measures, such as the introduction of trade penalties targeting New Delhi due to its buying of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a reliable exporter of oil and gas and anything needed for the advancement of India’s industry,” the Russian president said. “Moscow stands willing to persist in securing the consistent flow of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not referencing crude explicitly, supported the theme by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and important foundation of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the talks, in a media interview, Putin had criticized American pressure on India's energy purchases. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India claim the identical right?”

The visit represented his maiden trip to India following the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a deliberate show to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the men remained intact.

An Unusual Reception

In a unusual move, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders embraced warmly like old friends before enjoying a closed-door supper together.

Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “founded on shared respect and deep trust.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Partnerships

The meeting produced a number of significant pacts in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which targets to boost bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars per year by the end of the decade.

The leaders also vowed to reshape their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary source of weapons, its share has diminished in recent years as India works to widen its sources.

The joint statement highlighted an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of advanced military systems, though explicit details of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.

Overall, both nations affirmed that amid the “present intricate, tense, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, their relationship remain resilient to foreign influence.”
