Outrage Surges as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Backlash

Figures from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.

This is a vile and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his party to justify the statements.

The Director's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the killing of a different political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
