The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came this week.
The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
