Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor commented when questioned about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's current term as governor ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and pushing a proposition that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to withhold federal funds from California and suggested suspending the state's ability to grant CDLs.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," he stated, following a this week's deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that resulted in fatalities and injured individuals.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under federal law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was blocking $40m from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for CDL holders.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration responded in a previous comment countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
A recent study showed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an average of over 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, the governor commented while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the voters."
