We are checking images and video circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
