Catherine's Yearly Festive Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
