Barry Manilow to Undergo an Operation for Lung Cancer.

Barry Manilow announced that he has been diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will be having surgery.

Cancer Caught Early

The 82-year-old singer, whose parade of high-spirited hits from "I Write the Songs" has made him one of pop music’s enduringly popular showmen, will have an operation to remove part of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is detected early.

“For those who have been following, I recently went through six weeks of a severe cough followed by a relapse of another five weeks.

“Although I was recovered from the illness and back on stage in Las Vegas, my excellent physician insisted on an MRI just to make sure that there were no issues.

“The MRI discovered a malignant lesion on my left side that needs to be removed. It’s incredible chance (and a fantastic physician) that it was found so early.”

Rescheduled Shows

He has postponed a number of upcoming live performances, but indicated he would be on stage again by mid-February for his enduring concert series at his Vegas home.

He added: “The doctors do not believe it has metastasized and I’m undergoing further tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just home remedies and classic TV.

“I’m eagerly awaiting until I come back to my home away from home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our special weekend performances.”

Professional and Personal Journey

Manilow is now in the 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the public eye and publicly identified as gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager privately in 2014.

The pair were in a private relationship for over 35 years. In 2023, Manilow discussed how crucial Kief had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.

“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, returning to an lonesome hotel suite, you can land in a lot of difficulty if you, you know, you’re by yourself repeatedly,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was blowing up. And I was spared from having to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had somebody to share sorrows with or to celebrate with.

“I hope that aspiring artists don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
