A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
